Title: Great price on Garmin 390l LM GPS
Post by: Hartley on December 16, 2014, 12:26:23 PM
Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules but I wanted to let forum members know about a deal Halford have on til 2pm today.

They've discounted the Garmin 390lm to 313 but have a flash sale on til 2pm today.

I've just reserved one for collection for 264 quid!

If anyone been thinking about one as I have, it's a great price.

Paul

They'll be much cheaper than todays sale price if you wait until January, which is just over 2 weeks away.

Maybe, but too late for me now, sooner or later you have to make the call and pays your money. I'm happy at 264.

Good for you Paul, and thanks for heads up. I cant see them coming down that low even in January sales.

Looking myself at the moment, cant decide between Garmin (350 or 390) and Tomtom Rider.

Hi Stu,
That offer at Halfords has now ended so theyre back upto 313. Cheapest id found prior to that was Cel stores:
http://www.celstores.com/offer/motorcycleshow (http://www.celstores.com/offer/motorcycleshow)

If you enter in this code ( MCS2014)  they were doing the Garmin 390LM for £299 but also had offers on others including TomTom riders.Ends at the end of December. Might be wortha look.

Ive not used TomTom or Garmin before and there doesnt seem to be a lot in it. Think the 350 is a discontinued model now.

Cheers Paul,

I've only used Tomtom satnavs in the past (and only in the car), but I am used to their format and operation.  That said, the Garmin seems to be better specced.  You're right about the 350, getting my wires crossed earlier.

Thanks for the link.

Cheers

Stu

Just happened to mention the Satnav on the Halfords site to a workmate yesterday morning and he told me about the flash sale, he was on a mailing list for Halfords. Theres a box you can fill in at the bottom of their homepage.

they won't help you when you're entering a large foreign city full of one-way streets etc. A navi is ideal in built up areas. With a map you'll have to keep on stopping, unfolding, refolding, making mistakes etc. Not a nice thing to do in rainy weather when it's getting dark.

Maps have their place in the evening when planning the next day, then punch the selected route into the navi and off you go. Makes sure you don't take a wrong turning off a great road.

+1 Sat nav is one of the best bits of kit I've bought for my bike, invaluable in foreign city centres  :0461:

I spent some time wondering about getting a satnav and eventually took the plunge a couple of years ago and bought a cheap Chinese thing. I have to say it's been really good. It not without its faults but it was a lot cheaper than the list prices of the big brands at the time.

For me the big advantage of a GPS is that you can just programe it and ride, before  having one it seemed we were forever at the roadside looking at a map. what seemed  to happen to us would be youd come to a junction and the place names on the road sign didn't tie up with the places on the map. Became a standing joke.

I wouldn't go without a map as backup and reference,!but I do think, once you've input your route the GPS just lets you  enjoy the ride.

Does anyone know if you can adjust the volume ,as I would like to use it in my car as well as the bike. I have seen one report that says it can not be adjusted, and that in the car the volume is extremely loud.

Thanks for the info re halfords. I have been watching it at 313 but would have bought at the reduced price. Also looking at scala rider q1 teamset. Wondering if anyone out there have any reports on how well they match up. Ta Owen

I really like it.
I invested in the Sena 20 Bluetooth as well,  and now I can listen to music, hear my navigator and have really clear phone calls.
All in all, both item were quite expensive but they pair up and do what I wanted after trying lots of different things.

Hi Stu,
I haven't really used it much yet, only one day out really. I programmed a route in to it and it worked fine, was easy to see and the instructions were clear.
One issue I did have was with my Bluetooth headset. I had a cheap Chinese GPS before and had the matching cheap Chinese headset which worked fine and were loud and clear with the old GPS. Whilst the Garmin connected easily and did work ok, I found they were not very loud, about 70 I could hear something but not make out what was being said. It wasn't to much of an issue but I'll see how I get on and maybe try another headset. Mine is the 390 and doesn't have the music feature that Buckrs 590 does.

Overall I'm happy with it and found it easy to use once I'd got my head round using a different system.

I would also recommend the Engimoto mount. The Garmin was rock solid and didn't move at all.
Overall I dont regret the outlay.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.  I'll be going for the 390LM, resources wont stretch to the 590 unfortunately.

Where did you get the Engimoto mount from Paul? Google only seems to find the Italian site (and in Italian).

I did have to put a little cutout in the mount for clearance for the power cable, seems the mount on the 390LM maybe slightly different to other models, i contacted the seller with pictures and he said they were going to update the part so you maybe ok. It really wasnt difficult to do if they havent modified them yet.

I am a Garmin Zumo user and have been for many years but I am going to have a proper look at the new TT rider when it is released for sale soon http://www.visordown.com/product-features/new-tomtom-rider-motorcycle-gps/26144.html (http://www.visordown.com/product-features/new-tomtom-rider-motorcycle-gps/26144.html)

It seems to include many features that I would want next time I 'renew' my GPS

•Winding Roads: Find the most exciting winding roads and avoid the boring straights.
•Hilly Roads: Stay at sea level or climb the highest peaks.
•Round-trip Planning: Simply select where you want to ride and TomTom Rider will find the most exciting route.
•Portrait View: Simple rotate to portrait view to see more of the bends ahead.
•PC Route Planning: Pre-plan a touring adventure before leaving home.
•Route Sharing: Share a route with other bikers before setting off or after you return home.
•Lifetime TomTom Traffic: Ride with real-time traffic information for the lifetime of the device.
•Audio Instructions via Bluetooth: Keep your eyes on the road with audio instructions delivered through your headset.
•Track Support: Upload tracks (GPX format) and your TomTom Rider will show you the way.
•Hands-free Calling: Call hands-free while you ride.
•Weather-proof Design: As weather ready as you are.
•Glove-friendly Screen: Use your TomTom Rider even while wearing gloves.
•Sunlight Visibility: Make use of different colour options for different times of day.
•Trip Recording: Record your trip and relive the adventure any time.
•Trip Statistics: See how far, how fast and for how long you have ridden.
•Fully Interactive Screen: Pinch, zoom and swipe to interact with the map.

Hi Ian, the 390 has a lot of those features, though I'll admit there's a couple it doesn't.

Thanks for the info on the engimoto Paul. Looks like a good piece of kit.

New Tomtom looks interesting, competing with the 590 more than the 390 though, lot of similar features.  I would assume similar prices too, especially as a new model and will be some time before discounts appear.

Looks like the new Tomtom rider is released now. price seems to be £320 but a well know high street retailer is offering £20 discount to £299. Based on the spec looks like a good deal.

I've gone for the Garmin now, but thought others may be interested.
