AltRider rear Adv. rack
on: June 19, 2020, 11:42:19 AM
The AltRider rear Adv rack for the CRF1000L Africa Twin bolts right onto the VFRX. It gives a much more stable platform for luggage. The rack is also drilled for monokey hardware, although it moves any top box back 2 inches. For proper placement, the holes will need to be re-drilled 2 inches fwd. Its also drilled for those water and fuel bottle mounts. The quality is good. You will have to use the Givi monokey rack spacers or use flat washers to lift the rack about .25 inch. Although the mounting holes are exact, there are small differences in the OEM tail rack that affect top box placement and rack depth, both easily fixed with a drill and washers. Overall, I like it. My big North Face base camp bag can now lay along with the seat and rack without hanging over the back of the rack and is much more stable.

@DaveinNC, a rear rack is my next VFR farkle. The rack looks great! Did you shop for other racks besides the Altrider? Wondering why you purchased a rack that required modifications versus one that is specifically manufactured for the VFR.

No one makes one that is actually functional. The racks designed for the top boxes are useless as cargo racks. SW Motect sells an Aluma Rack with swappable components but it's expensive and has too many moving parts. I carry a tail bag, and when touring I strap a big North Face base camp bag along my seat. With the altrider rack it does not hang off the back and droop down and my tail bag doesn't hang over the edge. I have no intentions of modifying the rack, you only have to drill if you want to reposition the Monokey kit for Givi top boxes. I wont be needing that so mine was just a bolt on process.

Thanks for clarification that no rack modification is required - simple bolt on process. I have no intentions of mounting a top box. An Altrider rack is in my VFR’s future.

Glad to hear the Altrider rack is working out well.  I currently have the GIVI SRA110 with a V46 Topbox mounted that has pinion pad, but the Altrider may give my wife more room in it's stock form.

It will work with flat bottom boxes only, my old V47 wont work due to the recessed mounting, the V46 probably wont work either if the monokey receivers in the box bottom are recessed.

I had an AltRider rack on my Super Tenere and purchased the Givi Monkey Top Case Mounting Kit (https://www.altrider.com/givi-monokey-top-case-mounting-kit-for-altrider-luggage-rack/pid/487).  It worked great with the V46 (recessed mounting) case.  Looks like there is specific kit for the Africa Twin and it should work the same.

Interesting, they must make a modified Monokey mount. The Givi mounts wont work, I tried. The rack is too wide and wont fit in the recess. I suspect maybe they raised the mounts .25 inch or so.
