honda aux lights - were flickering and now really dim

    hi folks

wonder if anyone can shed some light on my issue

i use my XT for commuting and i ALWAYS run full lights... FOR MY OWN SAFETY

anyway a couple of weeks ago i noticed my aux lights flickering i.e. when at traffic lights

this morning after the bike was lying in the garage after a week of duties my aux lights are really dim ... initially they did not appear to come on but now just really dim.

is this just a bulb issue or more of an issue with wiring or something?

thats all the diagnosis i have ... any help thoughts greatly appreciated

I had a similar issue with my wife's Denali lights on her CTX.  Reached out to Denali and they responded that if all else is correct, and it is an issue with their product and not the bike's system, it could only be wiring (loose or corroded) or the relay.  I replaced the relay, after confirming the connections were clean and secure, and the problem disappeared.

    hi

thanks for quick response. with my limited knowledge of bike electrics i will check whatever terminals etc i can find or get easy access to when i get home. failing that i will take it to a decent mechanic

rang my local honda dealer to see if they could help or at least provide some assistance to my query in summary

they consider the bike to be really old (its 2013 with 13k)
could be a number of issues and WILL require being brought in and charged 55 quid for being plugged in and then every hr after that

Honda  UK really need to do something about their dealerships and the attitude and unwillingness to help without starting to rip you off in the process.

yes, all dealers and workshops must do all work for free and eat air :157:

When you need a plumber they also come to your house for free and you only have to pay for parts, right?  :164:

    battery appears to be fine.

no starting issues, always on the button, no dimming on main light/high beam etc and no obvious signs of drain.

i have noticed yesterday that the aux lights have increased in brightness again, so i do appear to have some kind of electrical/wiring issue.

Sounds like a loose ground.  I dont know how the OEM lights are wired but I would start by checking the 12mm bolt under the left side panel.  Bottom right in pic:

There is another ground point under the hinge of the tank, but I wouldn't think that would be tied to the lights.

If these lights have a separate ground point find that and check it.

Hopefully it's not a broken wire.  Those usually occur when a cable tie is placed a point of repetitive stress causing the wire to fatigue, very hard to spot.
