Groaning Noise while cooling down
« on: May 13, 2019, 07:28:47 AM »
I have ridden my new VFR1200X DCT just a couple times so far.  I don't want to wait for the 600 mile service to ask this question about a strange noise that the bike makes as it is shut off and cooling down.  Every few seconds, from somewhere around the steering head, I hear this groaning sound.  It kind of sounds like a donkey braying (but not as loud), or maybe a wooden chair being dragged accross a hard floor.  It sounds sloppy, like it could not be normal.  This continues for maybe an hour.  Any ideas?

Mine does the same, sounds like a vent or something, I’m not sure what exactly it’s doing.

Try the search option, this has been discussed here a lot of times.

I had searched, but just now I found that searching "vent noise" turned up some results.  I now believe that it is related to pressure in the tank.  My bike was transported from just above seal level to just short of 9,000' elevation where I live.  Not until I filled the tank did the noise relent while cooling down, at least for now.

Mine does it too and often for quite a while afterwards. If i am in the garage with the radio off  (so its quiet) it makes all sorts of funny strange noises.  I reckon its something to do with petrol venting and euro4 emission carbon capture etc. I'm sure its nothing to worry about.

Just to add to that, prior to my current 2015 model I had a 2013 CT. the fuel tank is definitely different around the filler cap area, almost like a second seal on the 2015. This would tie up with all the emissions requirements these days.

My 2016 makes all kinds of noises after a ride, so I'm guessing it's normal.
