    Oil level??

Why is it so hard to check the oil on a Honda?
On the 2016 VFR1200X DCT when the bike is cold, the oil window is completely covered. Way above the top indicator. After an oil change by the Honda dealer; the next morning it is the same: the window completely covered. I drain what seems like a pint, and after idling the motor for a few minutes, the oil settles just above the top bar. The next day I drive the bike for 40+ miles ,and after it is cooled down, the oil window is completely covered.
On the 2018 Honda Africa Twin DCT when the bike is cold after a few days, the dipstick shows oil on the top bar (full). After staring the bike and letting the motor idle for more than five minutes, I stop it and wait. After 10 minutes, the oil level on the dipstick shows barely over the low bar.
How do you know what is the right oil level on a Honda Motorcycle?

I had an instance a couple years ago when I thought I’d lost a lot oil over a days ride.
I checked my oil when we arrived at our hotel, following day we had a days ride and later that evening I popped to the bike for something noticed that there was no oil in the sight glass at all.
Obviously a bit concerned I dropped the bike off the cemtrestand and moved the bike side to side while a mate looked to see if the oil came up the sightglass which it did when leant a long way to the right.

I fired the bike up and ran it for a few minutes then around the block but the level was still low.

Then started a frantic search for the oil specified in the manual which is almost impossible to get I may add ( there’s a whole thread on this so I’m not going to go into that)

Anyway, we established there was a Suzuki dealer in the next town so we rode over and purchased some oil.

Oil in hand, walked back to the bike and the level was fine. Stayed fine for the rest of the trip and indeed until I sold the bike.

I can only assume there maybe an area within the casing that under certain circumstances the oil can “ hang up “ in. I have come across this ion my work before.

    Hi All
The proper way to check oil is when cold the reason its below the glass level when warm the oil is still around the engine. when cold the oil is in the right place so if its above the line on the glass there is to much oil in Hope this helps Cheers

    AT sequence is as follows

Place bike on side stand on level surface
Idle 3/5 min, Igniton off wait 2/3mins. Place bike in upright position
Remove dipsrick wipe clean, Insert dipstick so it seats, do not screw in.
Check oil level is between upper and lower level marks.

There is no noticeable difference between lower and upper times.

Times(3/5 minutes) of running the engine and waiting time(2/3 minutes) after switching off ignition.
