I think it has to do more with start up and warm up exhaust emissions than fuel mileage. It burns a wee bit leaner on startup due to less drag and gets up to operating temp faster. I still run 10-40 in my truck even though they keep trying to put some 0w-20 in it. The first time they did that I made them take it out, now they know. I broke my VFRX in with Rotella T4, as soon as I switched to Mobil-1 at 1000 miles I did notice easier starting and warm up. I guess like anything else you could run whatever oil you want for your climate as long as it is kept clean.
