On a related topic: How bad is it to overfill the crankcase? The oil window is completely covered.
The last oil change was done at the Honda dealer and the person there was really pushing the 10W-40 or 10W-50. "It is the summer and it is hot and 10W-50 would be better for the motor!"
Insisted on 10W-30 because I remembered the manual only specifying 10W-30.
Was made to feel uncomfortable because I resisted the expert's recommendation.
And now it is overfilled--can't see the top of the oil level.
How bad is it to overfill the crankcase?

I changed my oil today and used Castrol Power 1 Racing 10/30.
Will my girlfriend run off with the milkman, will I be shunned in the pub?
Please help me deal with the shame.

Its amazing LAV1000, its such a simple task and it can fill pages!.

Geirvmax - It will probably push the excess oil into the airbox breather.
I have seen dealers do this also, they drain the oil and if the manual says ( for example) put 4.5 litres in... they do that and close the cap, not allowing for residue in the engine or sump, not checking when its close to the top of the oil window.

The general issue here is often the local authorized Honda dealer will have their own recommendations contravening the Honda company and the owners manual. What advice do you follow?

I know this topic is a it old but I felt compelled to reply. On most vehicles I have owned in Australia there has been a choice of oils depending on temperature. On some newer vehicles the there is no choice. And some manufacturers have even gone to a higher viscosity recommendation after some engine failures. Anecdotal evidence points to emissions being the culprit for single oil recommendations regardless of temperature. I don't believe for one minute that an oil that handles -33C to 30C will adequately handle 0C to 45C ambient. For starters the actual oil temp rise in high temp operation is far greater than the ambient temp difference due to higher combustion temperatures how hard the engine is worked and other factors. In the the last million kilometres in various vehicles I have always used the highest viscosity oil recommended or one grade higher when only one grade is recommended, with zero problems. I changed to 10-40w Silkolene Pro XP on the last oil change on the CT and was rewarded with a quieter top end and better gear changes.

10-40W is fine if folks are truly still fretting over this topic.  :180:

Let's hold off on any judgments until Honda re-introduces the Crosstourer and then see what the manual says.

I have 4 litres of 10w-40 oil in the garage left over from my fjr days but my owners Manuel tells me 10w-30 for the CT seems a shame to waste it so can I use it with out long term adverse effects

I have always used 10 w 40 for mine. My CT has 90.000 km today.  :305: :305: :305:
