Weird "go to market" by Shell.....  but it is currently, only available at WalMart in one gallon jugs for about $21.

So I have ridden about 16000 miles and have used the the Honda GN4 10W30. At about 3000 miles I find the shifting gets noisy and the smoothness goes away. Here where I live it has been very hot, 90 plus most days in August.

Yesterday I changed oil and put in the Rotella T6 15W40. Now I will say that the first 50 miles there was a noticeable difference in shifting and quietness. Could be just new oil so we shall see. I am heading on a 1500 mile weekend trip next week so maybe by the time I get back I will have a better opinion.

As oils shear shifting gets clunky. The higher the viscosity the smoother the shifting. What you experienced is normal. I just changed my oil, Mobil 1 4T 10w40 with 4000 miles. Is used the same oil and it shifts smoother with fresh oil. 10w30 to me always shifts bad.

I have a question specifically for the DCT.  Honda makes several oils.  Their GN4 is what is recommended.  However, they now have a semi-synthetic (HP4M) and a full synthetic (HP4S).  Has anyone used these HP formulations?  Any feedback to give as it relates to the DCT?

After this was posted I changed my DCT to 10W-30 HP4S. Prior fill was 10W-40 GN4.

Have 2500 miles on the HP4S. Shifting is smooth, marginally quieter than before. Temp gauge rises to 3 bars more quickly and is less prone to drop to 2 bars. (Has never risen to 4 bars or higher). In hot ambient (say, 80s F) or hot driving conditions (urban; twisties), the bike noticeably throws off more heat in the area of the clutch cover and DCT solenoids, but not uncomfortably so. Average MPG is better by 0.5 to 1.0; on the HP4S the bike has produced its best all-time full tankfuls twice (roughly 47.5 MPG).

I think the HP4S is a very fine cool weather oil — engine heat throw keeps rider warmer and may as well enjoy the superior MPG. If I were doing a lot of desert riding or going for a multi-week tour fully loaded or a lot of riding with pillion, I’d probably go back to the 10W-40 GN4 or some other suitable multi grade that ends in a 40 such as the Rotella and Maxima oils mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

Safe travels!

All oils will degrade and loose their 'mojo' over time.  Only magic unicorn, horn oil stays perfect!

I have always intended to run oils it their full OCI.... fact of the matter is.... I usually end up dumping and changing it about 3k miles.  Because with four bikes..... I rarely reach 5k miles each year.  And at the beginning of winter each year, I change the oil and tuck them in for hibernation.

Next summer, with a ride to Prudhoe Bay and back.... I will be going a full 5k before I change it in the parking lot of an Anchorage Walmart.

For the DTC models.... I would only use the Honda GN4 10w30.......

Remember, I am using a blend of Rotella T4 15w40 Conventional and Rotella T6 15w40 Synthetic.  I've explained that I simply prefer semi-sythetic over straight synthetic.  I believe the semi-syn shears less quickly.

Anyway, I now have over 3,000 miles on the current fill and everything is spectacular and smooth.  I have a trip to Texas coming up and I will keep the oil in it... putting another 2k miles on the oil to total 5,000....  I expect it to be fine.
