Changing traction control settings while moving?

New 2016 VFR1200X owner here and noticed in the owners manual that it says the bike should be stationary when making any changes (button presses) to the TC settings.  This is contrary to what the Honda salesman at my dealership said and what has been reported on in countless video reviews I have seen from moto-journalists.  They are seen pressing the TC button at-will while riding in any gear, at any speed, etc.

What is the group collective on this subject or has anyone even given any thought to it?  Is it true that the bike reverts back to level 3 (maximum) TC after every restart (key turn) of the engine?  If so I'm not a fan of that sort of nanny control by the manufacturer.  :003:

Most salesmen have little or no product knowledge.   My 2014 model has the same notice in the manual to only change settings of the torque control when stationary. It also always starts out on level 3 whenever you start the engine.

I usually drive off without remembering to change the setting. I don't really notice the difference.  The action is not very intrusive.

I would think its to stop you claiming when you fall off trying to reach the button while moving

Well that's exactly what I am wondering.  Is there any mechanical reason to not make changes while moving or is this just Honda covering it's arse!

It's not personal.  Just pointing out that most I am hearing from seem to be saying the TC is intrusive and want it turned off or on the lowest setting.  I just bought the bike and won't be able to ride it for a few months due to inclement weather here so I was hoping to understand it before then.
