MPG question
on: October 20, 2015, 10:52:05 PM
This is the question

I'm driving around town and at 165km's the last bar starts flashing. I ride on a bit and it says I have 12 km left. I fill her up and find that there are nearly 3 ltrs left in the tank. The question is does the bike stop running when the computer tells it that there is no fuel left or when the tank is actually empty?

Cheers

No, if you went a bit further the numbers would disappear before it counted down to zero and be replaced by --

Not really....new bike and new technology for me. Going by my rough calculations I'd have 3.5 ltrs left which should get me another 30ish km's. With the old analogue gauge on my xjr you had a very good idea of where you where.

This is the bit I thought was a wind up. New technology or not, why would you think a computer would stop the bike when the fuel was gone? It would be the most unsafe event on a bike ever. The fuel gauge is just a monitor, nothing more. As is the countdown to zero on the miles left is also. All the ECM knows is there is no more fuel left..........Nothing more.

 :002: ...The problem is this....
The tank tanks 21l to fill.....But you don't ever get to use all 21 Litres.
the pick up in the tank won't be right at the bottom/sides where all the sh*t gathers....hence when we fill up we can only squeeze in @19.5 litres.
It's advisable to fill up when the countdown starts...."32 miles to go" doesn't mean 32 Miles!
I'd still prefer just a warning light....easier to spot than the LCD...

Any way Tony...short answer....
The Bike stops when there is no fuel available to be picked up by the pump....NOT when the tank is "empty"  :001:
It all started with a 1959 Vespa 125 Super.......
KMX125 KMX200 DRBIG 750 TDM800 R1100RS CAPONORD VARADERO.......

Thanks for those helpful answers and I realise that my question sounded daft lol

I seem to be getting more or less the same mpg around town as my old xjr

21.10L is my record. Squeeky bum time so it was and you can't coast a DCT.

Reguarly have gone to 20.5L. Still a litre left so no drama. Fuel countdown goes to a weird number like "9" before you get the "--" ( dash dash of doom.)
