Final Drive Oil Change ! have you done yours!!!
« on: August 05, 2012, 03:11:50 PM »
I thought I would change my Final Drive Oil after 1200 miles. As after having 3 Final Drives fail on my BMW GSA in the past it makes you some what paranoid  :156:.

See picture attached what old Oil  looks like after 1200miles compared to fresh 80W Oil .............very very easy to do well worth considering,I will do mine again at 2k then 4k and 6k until it runs almost clear :821:

Hi grahew,
Thank you for your post. When you re-filled, is it done on the side-stand, on level.. ground of course?

Level ground as you need to replace 200mltr and no more, plus if its not level you can't get the 200 mltr in :005:

I wouldn`t worry too much about final drive issues with a Honda. I owned 3 and currently own 1 GS and indeed, those final drives are shabby to say the least. Before the beemers, I owned 3 Pan Europeans on which I rode over 500.000 kms alltogether. Never had any final drive issues. When going on holiday with one of the beemers I always took final drive bearings (and oil) as my wife also rides an R1150GS... there was bound to go something wrong with one of the bikes.

Grahew

Coming from a GS like most I am pretty paranoid about final drives and will probably change the oil for my own peace of mind, not that I have ever heard of a Honda failing.

Just wondering where you are getting the capacity and oil specification from? Is this the kind of thing Honda list in the owners manual or are you getting it elsewhere.

Sorry for the daft question but don't have my bike yet.

Thanks

Mika

Hi Mika,

Not wishing to out do Grahew, but I can give a quick reply. The capacity is in the owners manual, 200ml. I have also changed the final drive oil, at 1550 miles. Ever so easy. Bought the oil and crush washer from my dealer. Drained it out hot into a calibrated jug. 200ml came out and I put 200 in and as I did it flowed out the level hole as they said it would. Not bits of metal or swarf, just a dark smelly oil. Peace of mind stuff really. Changing oil can only be a good thing!

I'm away on the bike at the moment and don't have the manual with me but I believe it recommends every 16k miles. That seems a long interval to me but it's so easy to change.
